Who We Are

The WORLD ASSOCIATION OF LATVIAN AMATEUR THEATRES (PLATS) is a non-profit organisation established on 16th January 2021, bringing together 22 Latvian diaspora theatre groups from across three continents. Our members represent a vibrant, global community spanning the United States, Canada, Australia, Denmark, Italy, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Norway, Switzerland, Germany, and Sweden.

PLATS unites theatre professionals and enthusiasts living outside Latvia, all driven by a shared commitment to strengthening Latvia's cultural identity and promoting Latvian theatre art on a global stage.

Our Mission

To foster a strong, active, and lasting connection between Latvian amateur theatre groups worldwide.

Our Goals

  • To promote collaboration and communication among Latvian theatre groups across the globe and with theatres in Latvia

  • To represent the interests of Latvian amateur theatres at national and international levels

  • To encourage participation in festivals in Latvia and beyond, including the Latvian Song and Dance Festival, global amateur theatre gatherings, and other major cultural events

  • To coordinate and support the Latvian amateur theatre movement through educational programmes, experience exchange initiatives, and professional development opportunities for our members

  • To raise the profile of Latvian theatres internationally and attract new members, with a particular focus on inspiring young people within the diaspora to engage in theatre

  • To preserve and promote Latvian cultural and historical heritage, strengthening ties between Latvian communities abroad and Latvia itself

  • To develop and maintain the resources – both material and non-material – necessary to support a thriving global Latvian theatre network

Our Structure

PLATS is governed by a seven-member Board, elected on a rotating basis for two-year terms at the organisation's General Assembly. The Board always includes representatives from each continent where PLATS members are active — the Americas, Australia, and Europe.

The current Board was elected during the General Assemblies held on 15th January 2023 and 18th January 2025.

Since 2025, PLATS has been a proud member of AITA/IATA — the International Amateur Theatre Association(Association Internationale du Théâtre Amateur).
